Phillipe Käfer, Brazil Financial Innovation Manager at Climate Policy Initiative (CPI), participated in Sustainable Finance for Livestock in Latin America, an event organized by the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) in Buenos Aires.

The event brought together leaders from the beef value chain, financial institutions, governments, and other stakeholders to explore opportunities to increase investment in sustainable livestock and scale successful financing models across the region.

Käfer joined the panel Financial Risk in Livestock Systems: How to Reduce It to Enable Credit and Unlock Investment, highlighting challenges and opportunities for mobilizing capital.

Deforestation, low productivity, fragmented supply chains, credit risk, and limited access to technology are frequently cited as barriers to investment in livestock systems. However, better screening, technology, and tailored financial mechanisms can mitigate some of these risks.

Drawing on examples from the Lab’s portfolio, Käfer demonstrated how guarantees, insurance, risk-sharing structures, and concessional capital can help address these challenges and expand access to finance.

Solutions such as the Responsible Commodities Facility, Caaporã | The Socio-Climate Benefits Fund, and Ecopec | Climate Smart Cattle Ranching (CSCR) illustrate how innovative financial mechanisms can support nature-positive investments and channel capital toward communities.

The event also featured members and observers of the Lab’s wider network, including Martha de Sá (Violet), Marcos Gambi (TNC) and Luiz Fernando Laranja (Caaporã).
