Overview

The Natural Investments Platform is a USD 100M impact-first platform to finance conservation and restoration projects in Southern Africa through patient, staged investment into nature-based project SPVs. Structured as a Protected Cell Company (PCC), the platform deploys risk-mitigating capital to project-level SPVs to develop scalable nature-based solutions and create institutional-grade natural assets for impact-oriented investors.

The Problem

Restoration and conservation of African landscapes face a structural financing gap. Fragmented governance, high upfront development costs, and project-by-project funding approaches make it difficult to scale investments or provide the long-term financial stability needed for conservation. As a result, many biodiversity-rich landscapes with strong climate mitigation potential remain underfunded despite growing global commitments.

The Solution

Natural Capital proposes the Natural Investment Platform, a blended finance vehicle that brings together conservation and restoration projects across African landscapes under a single investment structure. By combining different types of funding, from early-stage grants to equity and nature-linked bonds, the platform helps reduce risks as projects develop. This approach aims to turn conservation initiatives into viable investment opportunities and build a pipeline of projects capable of attracting long-term capital.

“The Lab’s process can help strengthen the instrument’s credibility with institutional investors and advance the formalization of natural capital as a credible, investable asset class by demonstrating a robust, replicable model.”

Target Impact

According to Natural Capital, pipeline projects supported by the platform could deliver climate mitigation potential exceeding 1 million tCO₂e annually through avoided deforestation, improved land management, and ecosystem restoration. Project revenues are intended to support conservation activities, strengthen climate resilience, and create local economic opportunities linked to the long-term health of these landscapes.
