Overview
Mitsiry Biodiversity and Climate Fund is a USD 50 million blended finance fund investing in regenerative enterprises to restore ecosystems and transform land-use value chains in Madagascar and other least developed countries in the Southwest Indian Ocean. The fund aims to support sustainable economic activity while promoting climate resilience and environmental restoration in the region.
The Problem
In Madagascar and other least developed countries in the Southwest Indian Ocean, widespread poverty drives reliance on deforestation, shifting agriculture, and natural resource extraction for livelihoods. These pressures are degrading ecosystems that are home to many endemic species, while also weakening climate resilience and limiting sustainable economic opportunities for local communities.
The Solution
Mitsiry Biodiversity and Climate Fund, by Miarakap and Kinomé, proposes a USD 50 million blended finance fund that provides long-term, patient capital to climate-smart and nature-based businesses in Madagascar, Mozambique, and Comoros. By combining concessional and commercial capital, the fund aims to reduce investment risks and support 13-15 local enterprises working on sustainable land use, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. A technical assistance facility will help strengthen business capacity and support environmental and social impact across the portfolio.
“We are at a pivotal structuring moment and need support to design our technical assistance facility, operationalize our risk, impact, and MRV tools, and finalize our senior tranche go-to-market.”
Koloina Ramaromandray, Fund Director, Miarakap
Target Impact
The vehicle aims to reduce environmental degradation and climate vulnerability in rural areas by supporting nature-positive businesses that create stable jobs and income. It targets 10,000 jobs, improved livelihoods for 400,000 people, USD 80 million in company revenues, 30,000 hectares sustainably managed, and 5 million tons of CO₂ reduced, avoided, or sequestered through sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and ecosystem restoration.
